THE FORGOTTEN SUPER MOBILE : PART-1

We all living in the era of mobile phones. And as our requirements are getting more and more everyday, our mobile phones also keeps developing. But in that process, some mobile phones are becoming famous, and many more are failing. Sadly, so many people didn't know this fact. And mobile phone companies trying to push their limits further and further in an attempt to impress the mass amount of audience. As we already know, NOKIA company had a serious downfall. But the super mobile that we are about to discuss is made by this company. It's NOKIA 808 PUREVIEW which is released in 2012 and it's camera is a huge success of all time.  It even gives a good competition to the present day high-end mobiles like iPhone11ProMax(2020) and Samsung Galaxy S20Ultra(2020).

NOKIA 808 PUREVIEW

Nokia808PureView's camera is a huge asset to it. Nokia developed PureView technology for delivering outstanding pictures. And up to this date, PureView Technology is one of the best. In 2012, iPhone5 is released and became a big hit because of it's software and camera and LTE connectivity. The Nokia808PureView's camera has no competition at that time because it's the best camera available on a mobile phone at that time on the planet. OK! why am I emphasizing it's camera so much?. Here's why..
It's Main Camera resolution : 38MP
It's Camera Sensor : 41.3 MP CMOS FSI Sensor
It's Image Processing Technology : PureView
It's Camera Sensor size : 10.67 x 8.00 mm i.e, 1/1.2 inch(bigger than SamsungS20Ultra)
Each pixel size : 1.4 µm.

ZEISS is an international company which has area of expertise in optoelectronics and optics. Currently, the high-end VIVO mobiles are using ZEISS sensors.

The Nokia808PureView has several predefined modes, you would be in shock after hearing those modes, the modes include :
Landscape, Close-Up, Portrait, Sports, Night, Night portrait, Spotlight and Snow.
Imagine having all these modes in 2012, that's a marvel!.
And a mode called Creative mode where you can control all your camera settings, like shutter speed, exposure, white balance, ISO, as per your will.

When Nokia realized the importance of camera, they collaborated with ZEISS and made a fabulous mobile camera

This is a image taken with Nokia 808 PureView

And it also includes various White Balance adjustments that includes adjustable WB and pre-adjusted WB such as Sunny, Automatic, Cloudy, Incandescent and Fluorescent.

The best thing is that, this mobile has a live histogram ,with the help of which you can monitor the exposure of a photograph while shooting it in challenging environments such as too dark or too bright.
Another cool feature is, it has a mechanical shutter button, which gives a feeling of operating a DSLR camera, and works just like it. By half pressing the mechanical shutter, you can lock the exposure.

ISO is another important thing. We can able to adjust the ISO of this mobile from 50 to 1600(which is brilliant in 2012).The various modes in this mobile enables you to shoot in 2/3, 5 or 8-megapixels in low-light to get best images.

If you think this is it for this mobile, then you're wrong.
It can also perform the following things :

1. Can do Video Resolution in 1080p, 720p, 360p

2. We have Frame Rate options : 30fps, 25fps, 24fps, 15fps

3. We also have various color modes such as normal, vivid, sepia, so on.

Because of the ultimate and advanced  41MP Sensor, you can able to zoom 4x in Full HD1080p, and 6x lossless zoom in 720p video. And an 12x zoom for non-HD video.

A WORTHY COMPETITOR :

Given all it's camera specifications, surely it must be in the competition of best mobile camera even in the current days. And yeah! after discussing about it so much, we want to see the comparison of Nokia808PureView to the present high-end mobiles.

After knowing about Nokia808PureView's camera, so many YouTubers and tech-people saw the performance of it. And all of their reaction is nothing but AMAZING!!!!. So, they asked themselves, why is it so good? Then they keep digging that phones camera hardware modules(sensor) and image processing software and they were awestruck.

The Engineering behind 808PureView's Carl Zeiss Lens :

So you see now, how the lens was being used for different mode of a camera. If you are filming in 16:9 mode then some portion of lens is not really being used. And if you are using 4:3 mode fairly most of the lens is being used. And different modes make use of different sections of the lens.

Sensor Size Comparison

That was a pretty big leap in mobile camera. As we discussed in previous blog(https://vanjavivekvardhan.blogspot.com/2021/04/high-megapixel-doesnt-necessarily-mean.html), high megapixel doesn't necessarily mean high clarity photos, the thing that defines photo clarity is "sensor size". And yeah, as the above pic suggests, Nokia 808 PureView definitely had a good camera sensor perhaps best at that time, in mobile phones.

Machine Learning Algorithm for Images : Well, as you know, the image processing software in mobiles is evolving everyday. Tomorrow's algorithm is better than today. In the same way, the Nokia 808 PureView's Machine Learning Algorithm is some steps behind Samsung S20 Ultra. I mean, Cmon! one is from 2012, the other is from 2020. So the image processing is advanced and better in S20 Ultra than 808PureView. But Nokia's 2012's PureView Technology gave good competition to 2020's Image Processing technologies.

!!!!!!!!!!!It's even better than a Professional camera!!!!!!!!!!!! :

Isn't that a huge success for a Mobile Phones Camera? When I discovered this, I was just simply blown off. Nokia808 PureView is performing better than a professional DSLR camera.

 Lossless Zoom :

It is the first smartphone to feature Nokia's PreView Pro technology, a pixel oversampling technique that reduces an image taken at full resolution into a lower resolution picture, thus achieving higher definition and light sensitivity, and enables lossless digital zoom. It was one of the most advanced camera phones at the time(2012). That means it all goes to sensor pixel size. If you want to zoom some particular  area, then the pixels which are present only in that area works, and the remaining pixels are unnecessary, so that was the point. So because of this you can get 5MP, 8MP photos with the same mobile phone camera.

Nokia808PureView vs Samsung S20 Ultra. You can watch the competition here.

Isn't that int
eresting and so advanced at that time(2012)?

So, how come it is not a sensation at that time? Why the customers not attracted to it, given it's features?

We will find the answers in Part-2.
